CURRENCY

In Kuala Lumpur, the official currency is the Malaysian Ringgit (MYR). The Ringgit comes in both coins and banknotes. Coins are available in denominations of 5, 10, 20, and 50 sen, while banknotes come in denominations of RM1, RM5, RM10, RM20, RM50, and RM100. Credit cards are widely accepted in major establishments, but it’s advisable to carry some cash for smaller vendors and local markets. Money exchange services are readily available at banks and currency exchange outlets throughout the city.   

CLIMATE

Kuala Lumpur enjoys a tropical climate, characterised by high temperatures and humidity throughout the year. October marks the end of the wetter season in Kuala Lumpur, transitioning into a drier period. During this month, you can expect warm and humid weather, with temperatures ranging between 24°C to 32°C. While rain showers are less frequent compared to previous months, occasional afternoon thunderstorms may still occur. It’s recommended to bring light, breathable clothing and carry an umbrella or raincoat.

SHOPPING

Kuala Lumpur is a shopper’s paradise with a diverse range of shopping experiences. From luxury malls like Pavilion KL to bustling street markets like Petaling Street, you’ll find everything from high-end brands to local handicrafts. Bargaining is common in markets, so don’t hesitate to negotiate for the best deals. Popular shopping areas include Bukit Bintang, KLCC, and Chinatown.

TIPPING

Tipping is not mandatory in Malaysia, but it is appreciated for good service. In restaurants, a service charge may be included in the bill; otherwise, a 10% tip is customary. Taxi drivers and hotel staff also appreciate small tips for exceptional service. While tipping is not mandatory, it is a way to show gratitude for excellent service.

POWER PLUGS

The electrical voltage in Kuala Lumpur is 230V, and the standard frequency is 50Hz. The power plugs and sockets used are of the Type G variety. Be sure to bring the appropriate adapters if your electronic devices have a different plug type. Most hotels provide universal outlets for the convenience of international travellers.

GETTING AROUND

Getting around Kuala Lumpur is relatively easy, thanks to its well-developed transportation network. The city offers various modes of transportation to suit different preferences and budgets. The Kuala Lumpur Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) systems provide efficient and affordable ways to travel around the city and its outskirts. For shorter distances and more flexibility, taxis and ride-hailing services like Grab are widely available throughout the city.  It's advisable to use metered taxis or agree on a fare before starting your journey to avoid any misunderstandings. Another popular mode of transportation in Kuala Lumpur is the iconic Rapid KL buses. For those looking to immerse themselves in the local culture, exploring Kuala Lumpur on foot can be a rewarding experience.
