Penang, an island state on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia, is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, historic architecture, and vibrant culinary scene. The capital city, George Town, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring a blend of colonial buildings, temples, and street art. Known as Malaysia’s food capital, Penang offers a fusion of Malay, Chinese, and Indian cuisines, making it one of Malaysia’s most diverse and top travel destinations.

Banknotes are available in RM1, RM5, RM10, RM20, RM50, and RM100, while coins come in denominations of 1 sen, 5 sen, 10 sen, 20 sen, and 50 sen. While credit cards are widely accepted, it’s advisable to carry cash when shopping at local markets or smaller establishments.

Penang is famous for its diverse food scene. Local favourites include nasi kandar (spiced rice with various curries), char kway teow (stir-fried noodles), and asam laksa (spicy-sour fish soup). Street food is widely available at hawker centres, providing a true taste of Penang’s culinary heritage. Refreshing drinks like coconut water and Penang white coffee are popular, and you’ll also find a variety of cafes and bars offering both non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages.

Penang’s standard electrical voltage is 240 volts with a frequency of 50 Hz. Malaysia uses Type G outlets (three rectangular prongs arranged in a triangle), the same as the UK.
